Melody’s Kilimanjaro Trek with Roam Wild Adventure: A Journey of Challenge and Connection
So, here’s a story that still surprises me – how a simple Instagram post of my friend Melody on top of Mount Kilimanjaro ended up leading me to become a co-owner of the very company she trekked with: Roam Wild Adventure.
I was just diving into the Kilimanjaro research rabbit hole: tabs open for days, comparing routes, guides, and tour companies. I’d watch YouTube videos until midnight, toggling between gear lists and training schedules, convinced I needed to find the perfect fit for such a massive adventure. Then, one night while scrolling Instagram, I saw Melody’s post.
Melody’s story
Melody’s a SoCal native who’s lived in Beijing, Tokyo, and now Taiwan. She runs her own business, is working on a doctorate in education, and travels with a style I really like – a mix of adventure and intention.
Her Kilimanjaro photos stopped me mid-scroll. There she was, standing at the summit sign, grinning like the wind itself was cheering her on. I messaged her right away, and within minutes she replied, sharing who she trekked with, what she loved, and the little things she wished she’d known before the climb. That five-minute exchange gave me more clarity than hours of Google ever did.
Melody’s not just stunning (seriously, her photos glow), she’s a total go-getter — climbing Africa’s highest peak with almost no formal training. She knew only one person in her group but ended up so close with all five strangers that they still keep a group chat a year later. I think that’s the magic of trekking in the wild: it challenges your body, clears your mind, and connects you deeply with both the earth and the people around you.
The people and the process
Melody did the 8-day Lemosho route, known for its beauty, its gentler acclimatization, and the fact that you get to see almost every landscape Kilimanjaro has to offer. Her favorite moments weren’t just the summit selfie (although, yes, that was epic). It was:
“the mornings filled with breakfast chats, the evening campfires where the group sang together, the shared laughs and struggles on the trail.
Summit day was also unforgettable — climbing 1000 meters in one day, going from desert scrub to icy alpine, it was breathtaking and brutal all at once.
But what made it special was that family vibe RWA builds — from the guides to the porters, everyone is there to support you.”… physically and emotionally. It’s the kind of care that makes you feel safe enough to push yourself further than you thought possible.
🌄 Melody’s Kilimanjaro Tips
1. Pack light but smart. You’ll be surprised how little you need — layers are your best friend. And you can always rent things you need on the ground.
2. Train for endurance, not speed. Long hikes with gradual climbs will help more than sprint workouts.
3. Bring small luxuries. Bring LOTs of sunscreen, face lotion, &/or face masks. The sun can be blaring down, so treat your skin nicely!
4. Trust your guides. They know the mountain better than anyone — listen to their pace and advice.
5. Journal daily. Even short notes will help you remember the little moments that photos can’t capture.
Why Roam Wild Adventure
Melody says it best:
“I recommend RWA to anyone who wants an authentic, unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure. They don’t just take you up a mountain; they make the entire journey special.”
That’s because Roam Wild Adventure isn’t just about reaching Uhuru Peak — it’s about everything in between: the way the air feels thinner and cleaner each morning, the sound of laughter echoing across camp, the way your guides greet you with a warm jambo no matter how tired you look.
The people who trek with us often say their Kilimanjaro climb changed them — not just because of the challenge, but because they felt seen, supported, and celebrated the entire way up.
I wouldn’t be writing this if I didn’t believe in what RWA does myself. It’s not just a trekking company; it’s a community that turns strangers into lifelong friends. If you’re thinking about trekking Kilimanjaro, do it with a group that feels like family, with people who genuinely care about your journey, not just your destination..
And then, we finally met in NYC
Here’s the fun part: Melody and I worked at the same startup years ago but never met face-to-face until just recently at our NYC reunion. It felt like coming full circle — from remote colleagues to mountain memories; from her inspiring my Kilimanjaro research, to becoming part of the company that made her trip possible.
It’s a reminder that adventure often begins with a single spark – a photo, a message, a story shared at just the right time. And sometimes, that spark grows into something much bigger than you could have imagined.
