How to Plan Your Mount Kilimanjaro Climb with Roam Wild Adventure
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the world’s most iconic adventure experiences. At 19,340 feet (5,895 meters), it is the highest mountain in Africa and a serious high-altitude trek that requires thoughtful planning.
At Roam Wild Adventure, we believe a successful Kilimanjaro climb starts long before you set foot on the mountain. From choosing the right season and route to deciding who you’ll climb with, each decision plays a role in your safety, comfort, and overall experience.
Below, we walk you through the key considerations to help you plan your Kilimanjaro expedition — and explain how we support you every step of the way.
When Is the Best Time to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro?
One of the most common questions we hear is: When is the best time to climb Kilimanjaro?
Mount Kilimanjaro does not follow traditional four-season weather patterns. Instead, it has two dry seasons and two rainy seasons.
Mount Kilimanjaro Seasons
- 🌤️ Short Dry Season: Mid-December to mid-March
- 🌧️ Long Rainy Season: Late March to early June
- 🌤️ Long Dry Season: Mid-June to late October
- 🌧️ Short Rainy Season: Early November to early December
The best time to climb Kilimanjaro is during the two dry seasons, when weather conditions are generally more stable and visibility is better.
That said, climbers should expect cold temperatures and strong winds at the summit year-round, and rain is always possible on the lower slopes.
Weather on Kilimanjaro: What You Need to Know Before Your Climb
While we typically recommend dry-season climbs, experienced trekkers sometimes choose the rainy season for fewer crowds. If your schedule only allows for a rainy-season climb, Roam Wild Adventure will help you prepare with proper gear and realistic expectations.

How Many Days Do You Need to Climb Kilimanjaro?
The number of days you spend on Kilimanjaro has a direct impact on your summit success.
Recommended Kilimanjaro Climb Duration
Our Kilimanjaro treks range from 6 to 10 days, but the primary challenge is altitude acclimatization, not technical difficulty.
At Roam Wild Adventure, we strongly recommend 8- or 9-day itineraries, which:
- Increase summit success rates
- Reduce the risk of altitude sickness
- Provide a safer, more enjoyable experience
Most of our climbers choose longer routes and consistently report feeling stronger, more confident, and better prepared on summit night.
Shorter routes are available, but they are best suited for those with prior high-altitude trekking experience.

Best Routes to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro
There are seven established Kilimanjaro routes, each offering different scenery, difficulty levels, and acclimatization profiles. All routes lead to Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Best Kilimanjaro Routes (Recommended by Roam Wild Adventure)
⭐ 8-Day Lemosho Route
⭐ 9-Day Northern Circuit Route
These routes offer:
- Excellent acclimatization profiles
- Fewer crowds
- Diverse landscapes and scenic views
- Higher summit success rates
They align perfectly with our slow-ascent, safety-first approach.
Additional Kilimanjaro Route Options
- ✔️ 7-Day Rongai Route
- ✔️ 7-Day Machame Route
These routes are popular and scenic but involve faster altitude gain and slightly lower success rates due to shorter durations.
Most Roam Wild Adventure group climbs follow the Lemosho Route or Northern Circuit, with limited departures on Rongai and Machame.
Group Climb or Private Climb?
Roam Wild Adventure offers both group climbs and private climbs, depending on how you want to experience the mountain.
Group Climbs
Group climbs depart on scheduled dates and are perfect for:
- Solo travelers
- Friends or couples
- Those who enjoy shared experiences and community
Our groups are intentionally kept small and supportive, often attracting adventurers from the U.S. and other English-speaking countries. Many of our guests arrive solo and leave with lifelong friends.
All group climbs are scheduled during Tanzania’s dry seasons for optimal conditions.
Private Climbs
Private climbs are fully customizable and ideal if:
- Your dates don’t match group departures
- You want a more intimate experience
- You’re traveling with a specific group
Private climbs can be arranged on any route, any duration, and almost any date, subject to guide availability.

How to Choose a Kilimanjaro Guide Company
Choosing the right Kilimanjaro guide company is the most important decision you will make.
Mount Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude environment with real risks, and not all operators follow proper safety or ethical standards.
What to Look for in a Kilimanjaro Guide Company
A high-quality Kilimanjaro operator should offer:
- Highly trained, experienced guides focused on safety and care
- Strong acclimatization protocols and daily health monitoring
- Quality camping gear designed for alpine conditions
- Fresh, nourishing meals prepared on the mountain
- Ethical porter treatment, aligned with KPAP guidelines
- Commitment to sustainability and community impact

Who Should You Climb Kilimanjaro With?
Once you’ve decided to climb Kilimanjaro, the next step is choosing your teammates. If you’re dreaming of Kilimanjaro, chances are someone else in your life is too — even if they haven’t said it out loud yet.
We recommend that one person acts as the trip organizer, finalizing dates, routes, and logistics before inviting others to join. This streamlines planning and reduces stress.
Close friends and family often make wonderful teammates — but don’t underestimate the power of sharing your plans publicly. Many of our guests have built their Kilimanjaro team through friend referrals, social media posts or casual conversations.
Sometimes, the people you least expect are waiting for an adventure like this.
