From Climber to Changemaker: Welcoming Pan Luo to Roam Wild Adventure
Sometimes, one trip nudges you to say yes to something wilder.
When Pan Luo first heard about Roam Wild Adventure, it was from her friend Melody—someone who had just returned from an unforgettable experience climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. Melody called it one of the most rewarding and carefully managed trips she’d ever taken. From seamless logistics to the expert guides, every detail was personalized and thoughtful.
That conversation stayed with Pan. She had traveled extensively—over 40 countries, countless programs, and immersive international experiences—but something about Roam Wild struck a chord. Maybe it was the way Melody spoke about the people, or the care behind the experience itself. Within days, Pan reached out to co-founder Helen and booked her own journey.
What followed was nothing short of transformative.
A Journey That Changed Everything
Pan’s journey began with an unforgettable safari in the Serengeti. Guided by Will—whose patience and sharp eyes spotted leopards from miles away—they immersed themselves in the wild. There was something magical about dining under a sky filled with stars, surrounded by the vastness of the plains. The camps were cozy, the food delicious, and every moment felt like a fresh adventure. It wasn’t just seeing the animals, but feeling the heartbeat of the land and its people.
After the safari, Pan joined a group hike on the Lemosho Route of Mt. Kilimanjaro, one of the most scenic and remote trails to the summit. Led by head guide Benson and co-founder Ezekiel, her group bonded quickly—over shared dreams, altitude adjustments, and the emotional pull of the mountain.
They reached Uhuru Peak on Christmas Day, just as a rare snowstorm gently blanketed the summit in soft white. The climb was grueling—the coldest, darkest night Pan had ever faced—hiking through a fierce snowstorm with thinning oxygen. Yet, the steady energy and encouragement from Benson, Ezekiel, and Medi kept the group moving forward, one determined step at a time. When the snow grew heavier, Ezekiel and Benson knelt down to help secure their crampons, a small but powerful act of care. All around them, the mountain transformed into a magical spectacle: hundreds of headlamps glowing across the slopes, lighting up the vast snowy expanse like a Christmas tree. The guides’ voices echoed through the silence, cheering not only their group but the entire mountain, lifting everyone’s spirits against the biting cold. Pan recalled those moments vividly—how that collective support turned the impossible into a shared triumph. When she finally stood at Uhuru Peak, 19,341 feet above sea level, legs trembling and heart full, she was overwhelmed by the raw power of the moment—and the deep bond with the team who had become like family.
“It wasn’t just the beauty of the place,” Pan remembers. “It was the heart of the team. It felt like coming home.”
She returned home to Boston, curious.
Inspired by a Founder’s Story
Back in the U.S., Pan couldn’t stop thinking about the people who had built Roam Wild Adventure. She began learning more about its origins—how it was born from the unlikely friendship between Helen Soto, a solo female traveler from the U.S., and Ezekiel Kombe, a lifelong Tanzanian guide and proud member of the Chagga community.
Helen had first traveled to Tanzania on a whim, seeking clarity after a difficult chapter in her life. The experience of climbing Kilimanjaro—led by Ezekiel—changed everything. The two became close friends and later co-founded Roam Wild Adventure with the vision of creating transformational travel experiences that benefit everyone involved: the guest, the guide, and the local community.
This wasn’t about mass tourism or checking boxes. It was about doing things differently—with intention, integrity, and joy.
That mission resonated deeply with Pan. Her own career had been rooted in the belief that travel is one of the most powerful tools we have for human connection and self-discovery.
From Global Educator to Roam Wild Partner
Before joining Roam Wild, Pan spent over a decade in international admissions and global education, working at top U.S. institutions like Brandeis University and Wentworth Institute of Technology. She led international student programs, built relationships across borders, and helped thousands of students expand their worldview through meaningful cross-cultural learning.
She had also lived in China, directed study abroad initiatives, and worked with educators around the globe to shape ethical and immersive student experiences. Over time, though, she found herself craving something more hands-on—more personal. She wanted to be part of something where the mission wasn’t just written in brochures, but lived every day.
Roam Wild became that place.
After many heartfelt conversations with Helen and Ezekiel, Pan made a bold decision: she left her role in higher ed to join Roam Wild Adventure as a partner and strategist. Her focus? Helping the company grow its impact through student and volunteer travel programs—immersive, ethical journeys that blend learning, cultural exchange, and service.
Building the Future, Sustainably and Soulfully
As Pan sees it, this next chapter of Roam Wild isn’t just about adding trips to the calendar—it’s about expanding the ways people connect, grow, and give back through travel.
She’s currently developing programs designed for students, gap year travelers, and universities that want to offer transformational global experiences rooted in community engagement, environmental conservation, and intercultural understanding. These programs will build on Roam Wild’s foundation of local partnership, ethical travel practices, and deep respect for the people and places we visit.
“What drew me to Roam Wild wasn’t just the mountain or the animals,” Pan says. “It was the feeling that this company was truly walking the walk—supporting women guides, investing in local schools, minimizing environmental impact, and doing all of it with so much heart.”
And now, she’s helping us do even more.
What’s Ahead
Together with Helen, Ezekiel, and our incredible team of guides, Pan is helping Roam Wild expand thoughtfully—so we can welcome more students, more change-makers, and more soulful travelers to Tanzania and beyond.
Whether you’re a college student eager for a global service opportunity, a woman ready to chase your summit dreams, or a family looking to travel with purpose, we hope you’ll find something meaningful in what we’re building.
We’re beyond thrilled to welcome Pan Luo to the Roam Wild family. Her story is just beginning—but like so many of ours, it started with one powerful decision: to say yes to adventure, yes to change, and yes to something greater than herself.
